ENGEO assessed five adjoining residential properties for the presence of asbestos in soil prior to redevelopment by Housing New Zealand Corporation (HNZC). ENGEO completed a detailed site investigation (DSI) to assess the distribution and scale of asbestos contamination. The DSI encountered asbestos fibres and asbestos containing building material within the soil over a significant area of the site.
HNZC and ENGEO completed a remedial options assessment to evaluate all possible solutions to remove or manage the asbestos considering cost effectiveness, remedial practicality and ease of implementation. ENGEO developed a solution to encapsulate the soil contamination within a specifically designed remedial cell on site. The detailed remedial action plan was presented to the City Council. The solution was achieved in equal amount of time with more than $100,000 in savings compared to traditional off-site disposal methods.
