WineWorks is a 20,000 m2 wine bottling and storage facility in Onehunga, Auckland.
ENGEO provided geotechnical and environmental investigation, analysis, reporting, and construction observation for the 20,000m2 bottling and warehouse facility.
The site was underlain by variable depths of heavily contaminated, undocumented fill and compressible soils overlying an undulating basalt flow, which provided a challenge due to the low settlement tolerances required by the warehouse and encountering voids in the basalt during piling.
Challenges included encountering highly variable cavities and voids in the basalt during piling, presence of heavily contaminated subsurface soils, and presence of highly variable depths of undocumented fill. ENGEO also designed and provided onsite technical supervision of the development of a production water bore at the site.
ENGEO recycled existing concrete slabs on site and used it as engineered fill to build an engineered raft to mitigate the settlement from the variable depths of compressible soils. The perimeter ground beam was founded on piles bearing into the basalt, which was found to contain voids through some sections. Injection grouting with low strength flowable fill (using variable controlled viscosity) was used to fill these voids. To reduce the consumption of public water and the associated cost of public water fees for bottling, ENGEO installed a production water well in the underlying aquafer.
During construction, ENGEO assisted with delineating the cut to waste fill stockpile profiles (clean fill, managed fill, hazardous fill) to generate significant cost savings. Our multi-disciplinary field staff provided the advantage of monitoring both the geotechnical and environmental aspects onsite.
ENGEO has developed a proven track record in partnering with WineWorks demonstrated by previously undertaking the development of their additional warehouse at their Marlborough facility and carrying out initial works at their adjoining facility in Onehunga at 298 Neilson Street.
